Account and Deposit

Can You Recover a Binance Deposit If the Address or Memo Was Wrong

· ~ 16 min read · CryptoPort Editorial

Address and Memo Are the Two Gatekeepers of Your Deposit

When depositing crypto to Binance, you need to get two things right: the deposit address and the Memo (also called Tag or Note — not required for all coins). Getting either one wrong can cause your funds to not arrive.

Think of the address as the building's street number and the Memo as the floor and apartment number. Wrong street number, and the delivery goes to the wrong place. Wrong apartment number, and the delivery reaches the building but can't find you.

Wrong Deposit Address

Used the Address for a Different Coin on Your Account

For example, you meant to deposit USDT (ERC-20) but accidentally copied your ETH deposit address. On Ethereum, different token deposit addresses for the same account may be identical, so funds might still reach your account. But this isn't always the case — it depends on the specific situation.

Sent to Someone Else's Address

If you sent crypto to someone else's address (whether or not they're a Binance user), your coins went to their account. Blockchain transactions are irreversible — there's no "undo" button.

If the recipient is also a Binance user, you can contact Binance support, but Binance can't transfer coins from their account without consent. You'd need to find a way to reach them and negotiate a return.

If the recipient isn't a Binance user (e.g., an external wallet address), recovery is essentially impossible.

Address Replaced by Clipboard Malware

A type of malware monitors clipboard contents and silently swaps crypto addresses when you copy them. You think you pasted your own address, but it's actually the attacker's.

Prevention: After pasting an address, always verify the first 6 and last 6 characters match the original.

Memo/Tag Issues

Which Coins Require a Memo

Not all coins need a Memo, but the following common coins require a Memo or Tag when depositing:

  • XRP (Ripple): Requires a Destination Tag
  • XLM (Stellar): Requires a Memo
  • EOS: Requires a Memo
  • ATOM (Cosmos): Requires a Memo
  • BNB (on certain chains): Requires a Memo

When you select a coin on the deposit page in the Binance app, if a Memo is needed, the page will clearly prompt you and display your unique Memo.

Memo Left Blank

Many coins that require a Memo use a "shared address" system — all users share the same deposit address, and Binance uses the Memo to identify which user's deposit it is.

If you left the Memo blank:

  • The coins did reach Binance's wallet, but the system can't determine who the deposit belongs to
  • You'll need to contact support for manual processing
  • Processing typically takes 1-7 days
  • Support will ask for TxID, deposit amount, correct Memo, and other verification info

Wrong Memo Entered

For instance, your Memo is "123456" but you entered "654321." In this case:

  • If "654321" happens to be another user's Memo, your deposit may have gone to their account
  • If "654321" doesn't match any user, the effect is the same as leaving it blank — the system can't match it
  • Either way, you'll need to contact support

Random Text Entered as Memo

Some beginners don't understand what Memo means and enter words like "transfer" or "buy crypto" in the Memo field. This is equivalent to a wrong Memo and requires contacting support.

How to Recover a Deposit with the Wrong Address or Memo

Step 1: Confirm the Funds Were Actually Sent

Look up the TxID on a blockchain explorer to confirm the transaction succeeded. If it's still pending, you may have a chance to cancel (depending on whether the sending platform supports it).

Step 2: Analyze the Type of Error

  • Used another coin's address on your own account? → May still arrive automatically
  • Sent to someone else's address? → Very difficult to recover
  • Memo left blank? → Solvable via support
  • Wrong Memo? → Solvable via support
  • Wrong chain? → Contact support; some cases are recoverable

Step 3: Contact Binance Support

After signing up for Binance, submit a ticket or contact live support in the Help Center. Provide:

  • Your Binance UID
  • TxID
  • Correct deposit address and Memo (from the Binance app)
  • The address and Memo you actually entered
  • Coin, amount, and network
  • Blockchain explorer screenshot

Step 4: Cooperate with Support Verification

Support may request additional identity verification or documentation. Be patient and cooperative.

Processing Times

  • Memo blank/wrong: Usually 1-7 days
  • Same-chain wrong address: May require technical investigation, days to weeks
  • Cross-chain deposit: May take longer and success isn't guaranteed

Can Old Addresses Still Be Used

In Most Cases, Yes

Binance deposit addresses assigned to you are generally valid long-term — they don't expire even if unused for a long time.

But There Are Exceptions

  • Binance wallet architecture upgrades may generate new addresses
  • Certain coins' addresses may change under special circumstances

Safest practice: Always get the latest address and Memo from the Binance app before each deposit. Access the deposit page via the Binance app.

Does the Memo Change

Memos are generally fixed and don't change frequently. But for safety, confirm it each time.

Good Deposit Habits

Always Get the Latest Address from the App

Don't rely on addresses saved in notes or chat histories. Taking 10 seconds to get a fresh address from the app is worth it.

Copy-Paste, Never Type Manually

Addresses are long strings of random characters — manual entry is extremely error-prone. Always use copy-paste.

Verify After Pasting

After pasting the address, check the first 6 and last 6 characters. Confirm they match before proceeding.

Verify Memo Separately

If a Memo is needed, copy it separately from the Binance app — don't mix it up with the address. Double-check after filling it in.

Test with a Small Amount First

The first time you deposit to a new address, send the minimum amount as a test. Only send larger amounts after confirming it arrives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Give My Deposit Address to Someone to Send Me Crypto

Yes. Deposit addresses and Memos can only be used to receive funds into your account — they can't be used to withdraw. Sharing your deposit address is safe.

If I Have Multiple Binance Accounts, Are the Addresses the Same

Different accounts have different deposit addresses. Be careful not to mix them up.

What If I Accidentally Copied the Network Name Along with the Address

Most sending platforms will detect the extra text and show an error. If there's no error, you need to manually delete the extra content and keep only the pure address string.

Is There a Fee for Support to Handle Memo Issues

Currently, Binance doesn't charge for resolving Memo-related issues. However, cross-chain fund recovery may incur a fee. After signing up for Binance, you can check related policies in the Help Center.

Safety Tips

  • Always get your address and Memo from the Binance app — never use addresses provided by third parties
  • After pasting, verify the first and last characters to guard against clipboard hijacking
  • For coins that require a Memo, always fill it in — skipping it causes deposit delays
  • Don't perform deposit operations on public computers (which may have keyloggers or clipboard hijackers)
  • Regularly check your device's security to ensure no malware is present
